While meta descriptions may seem very old school at this point, they do still matter in the search results.  Learn how to create relevant meta descriptions that entice searchers to click on your results and avoid Google creating a meta description for you.

What is a meta description?

  • A meta description is a small blurb of information displayed in the search results along with the name of your page.

  • Each page of your site should have a unique meta description.

  • This information lets readers know what they can expect to find when they click on a search result.

Why do I need a meta description?

Meta descriptions let readers know what’s on your pages and helps search engines to better index your pages in search results according to relevancy.

What happens if I don’t have a meta description?

If you don’t have a meta description Google and other search engines will create a description of your page for you which may not convey what you’d like to say to your users. For this reason it’s better that you create your meta description for accuracy.

How long should my meta description be?

Meta descriptions should be written to a length of 155 characters or less due to the fact that anything beyond this may be cut off by search engines in the search engine results page.

How should keywords be included in my meta description?

  • Keywords used in your meta description should be relevant to the page and included in a way that gives the description the feel of natural conversation.

  • Whatever you do, don’t lead readers on with a false description.

  • This will likely result in bounces from your site and could also result in penalties from search engines as well resulting in a lower search engine page ranking.

  • Keywords should ideally be long tail to see a large volume of search queries match your description.

How can my meta description be optimized to increase clicks for my site in the search results?

  • With a truthful meta description that is kept below 155 characters and written in natural language you will see good results.

  • Including action words such as buy, click, learn, view, watch etc… can also help to increase your clicks.

  • Keywords have long been a concern in SEO and as mentioned above the best strategy is to include long tail keywords in a natural way for best results.
